I am a big fan of old fashioned letter writing and I love having pen pals. There's nothing like a hand-written letter for really getting to know someone. So, my question for you is - what fictional character would you like to have as a pen pal, and why?

I would want to be Delilah Bard from the Shades of Magic series' pen pal. I wouldn't expect letters often, just maybe whenever she hit a port, but I would love to have firsthand knowledge of her adventures--and be her best friend because she is awesome!

DeleteOh dear, I'm not being original. But, .i'd also like Anne of Green Gables as a pen pal. I'm just sure she would be a prolific letter writer painting a picture of her life and responding to mine. I'm old enough that my IRL childhood friends were before the Internet (or cell phones, heck not even multiple phones in a household and some relatives still on party lines). Military brat me lost touch with many by giving up after letters went unanswered or too seldom answered.

ReplyDeleteThis is a hard one.....I'm not a great pen pal to be honest but If I had to choose I would love to have Mercy Thompson from Patricia Briggs books. She's a coyote skin walker and her days would be interesting. I bet we could swap cookie recipes.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to be a little lazy and pick the protagonist of the book I'm currently reading, Ivy Aberdeen. She's 12 and is processing her sexual orientation and I think it would be great to provide her with support and guidance during this time. She's also a brilliant blossoming artist who would probably include artwork in her letters!

Spouse: Ford Prefect. Not so much to be pen pals, I'd just like to be on his mailing list. Maybe get a heads up and an escape route when Earth blows up.
Child 1: Hermione Granger, because she's so smart and awesome! No, wait... Someone in Night Vale! Or no... pens are illegal there. Ok ok, I know, Lin or Rufus the mouse from the Twistrose Key, or Niklas or Tyst the Lynx from the sequel. We could talk about magic and talking pets.
Child 2: Red from Pokémon Adventures, so he can tell me how to get into that world and become a Pokémon trainer. No, I changed my mind. Blaine! Because Blaine is a scientist, so he can help me get to the world of Pokémon.
This is a good question! I would have to say Marius from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles!! He's ancient so he has a lot of stories, loves books too, and loves art, my kind of person (or vampire for that matter).

ReplyDeleteI'll be romantic in this mini-challenge and I'll go for one of my literary loves: I'd be penpals with Iñigo Montoya, from The princess bride, so he would write about his many adventures learning how to fight to avenge his father from his terrible death. He would also be devastated due to the years that have keep us separated, but I'd tell him I'm also learning swordplay because, in the end, we'll end up being pirates together :)
I'd love to have Mr. Tumnus as a Pen Pal. I think it would be fun to hear about Narnia through a fawn's eyes.

ReplyDeleteI’m part of a fountain pen pen pal group and have thoroughly enjoyed the friends I’ve made! If I could have a fictional character as a pen pal, though, I’d choose Atticus Finch (the TKAM version; not the Watchman version!) He’d give incredible advice and would provide the best observations of his world, thereby opening mine. Maybe he’d include a note or two from Scout or Jem- hearing of their adventures would be delightful. I could drop a note to Boo in there, too, to express my admiration and support. I’m halfway tempted to write to him anyway!

I would choose any of the side characters in A Court of Mist and Fury. All of the characters have so much history about them but we don’t get to hear it all. I would love to be able to hear about their lives, their stories, and all of the adventures that brought them to each other.

But it would have to be Emily Evans a pioneer woman from the collections of Janette Oke. I've always said that it's my all time favorite book and then upon rereading it a second time it didn't have the same feeling for me . . . but I'm intrigued by the pioneer times . . . would not have wanted to live then . . . but love the simplicity and frugalness of those women.

I think that we could talk about boring things together and be really intrigued by what we had to say. There is a scene in this book that he becomes fascinated with a cocoon he finds in his apartment and I think that is the sort of thing we would write to each other about haha.

ReplyDeleteThere are many characters I'd like to write letters to (the English teacher prompts...). Right now, I'll choose a book I recently finished, Gap Creek. I'd write to Julie Harmon because she is a teenager taking on the world on the frontier. I want her to know that her life is indeed hard, but it likens others of the day, and that she will make it. But I'd like to be her comforting voice while she seems to have none.

I still miss her, even though I recently watched the miniseries based on the books. So I’d be Mary’s penpal, though she was always very busy with survival and all on Cape Random in the earlier decades of the 1800s, so l don’t know if she’d make time for letters! But I could try:

She seems like someone I could get along with, especially her grandma version of herself. Plus! There is the slight chance that while reading her letters, I could be whisked off into the book world!

They essentially oversee the use of magic in all of the connected worlds -- so wouldn't they constantly be seeing the most amazing things? ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I always wanted to have Lyra from His dark materials series by Phillip Pullman. This readathon I have read his new book La Belle Sauvage, and I have fallen in love again with his universe. So I think maybe a older version of Lyra would be a great pen pal. She has so many amazing adventures to describe, and at the same time she is a very thoughtful person.
ReplyDeleteJane Eyre! Before I read it, I was terrified of classic literature, but I wanted to watch a modern day retelling of it! I was surprised to see how powerfully I connected to Jane. Her problems with caring *about* herself (vs merely *for* herself), her bravery, her difficult childhood, her journey to forgiveness, her journey to friendship. I'm still in awe of her. I even got a tattoo to honor the book!
