Armchair BEA Day 4 - Beyond the Blog

Today's assignment at Armchair BEA is to "share your tips for getting beyond your blog".  This could include freelance writing, monetizing, etc.  I have no experience with those areas, but I do get "beyond" being a book blog by sharing about daily life, gardening, parenting, crafts or whatever else comes up.  Although this blog started out to be strictly about books, it has expanded and usually the posts about family life garner far more responses than the book reviews.  If you are a blogger, I encourage you to broaden your horizons and write about your life beyond books.  When I'm behind with my reader (when am I NOT behind?) I find myself reading the life posts and skimming past the book posts.

If you're new here and want to know more about our life beyond the books, here are a few posts that will give you an inside glimpse:

"Musical Vehicles" - Part 2 of our ongoing vehicle crises.

"I Know When I've Been Insulted" - Trying to parent college-aged offspring

"Hallelujah, Holy S**t, Where's the Tylenol" - Thanksgiving vacation catastrophe

"Give Me Park Avenue" - My experience with farm life . . . and snakes

"Muskrat Love" - Further exploits with wildlife on the farm

"Gabby's Post" - Goofy guest post by the dog we adopted from a rescue shelter

  1. I agree! I was hesitant at first to start writing personal posts, but I realized that they actually get a lot more responses. And I think that when readers get to know you a little better as a person, they also respond to book posts more because they appreciate your taste and judgement.

I hope more bloggers start doing more personal posts!

  2. It does help to know a bit about the blogger behind the page. It's hard to remember everyone, but if I've read something personal, I'm like "Oh, yea, she's the one that...." Great suggestion! My BEA Post

  3. I've been waffling on whether or not to write more personal posts. I've dipped my toes in the water by beginning my Notes from the corner posts.

  4. Personal posts are definitely fun to read, but I like a good balance between the books and the personal. It's funny, but I don't read many non-book blogs because I just relate so much more to fellow readers. :) And reading their personal posts is great. I think it gives a more well-rounded picture of them, and that can in turn help me see their book reviews more through their eyes - understanding where they're coming from.

  5. I really haven't ventured into writing too many personal posts, mostly because I didn't know how they would go over since I'm supposed to be a book blogger and all.
